The latest science is abundantly clear - global emissions must plummet this decade to avoid climate catastrophe. But it’s not too late for Australia to step up. Every country, including Australia, must bring the most ambitious climate commitments and actions they can muster to the international climate conference, COP26. So together, we’re sending a message to key Federal Cabinet decision-makers and urging them to step up, not #COPOut at COP26.

Dear Cabinet Ministers,

I’m writing to share a copy of the Climate Council’s new report, From Paris to Glasgow: A world on the move.

It shows that Australia is ranked dead last when it comes to cutting our emissions and moving away from fossil fuels, at a time when the rest of the world is racing to lead the global energy transition, creating thousands of jobs in new, clean industries and realising the social, health and economic benefits of decarbonising their economies.

Australia is being left behind, but it is not too late for us to play a constructive role in international climate action, boosting our international reputation, unlocking new economic opportunities for Australians, and helping protect communities everywhere from the ravages of climate change.

To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, Australia must come to Glasgow with clear and credible plans for cutting emissions. This means: 
- A substantially strengthened emissions reduction plan for 2030
- A new commitment of funding to support climate action in developing countries.
- A commitment to immediately end all public funding for coal, oil and gas.

A commitment and plan for rapidly cutting our emissions this decade will unlock investment and create new jobs in renewable energy and clean industries; particularly in regional areas.

The majority of Australians want to see us go further and faster on climate action, so I urge you to listen to the science, and the people of Australia, by stepping up and committing to a plan to deeply and rapidly cut emissions this decade.
