I am a constituent and voter in your federal electorate.

I understand the science and accept the facts - that the catastrophic bushfire conditions that have devastated Australia over recent months have been driven by climate change.

Any bushfire recovery effort will be incomplete unless accompanied by a strong climate policy that rapidly and significantly cuts our greenhouse gas emissions. Our current targets, as they stand, are woefully inadequate and well below what the science says is necessary.

I respectfully request that you acknowledge and speak to this view in any upcoming bushfire, climate, energy or environmental debate, as is your duty as my elected representative in Federal Parliament.

Hotter temperatures and drier conditions in southern Australia are contributing to a longer fire season and fewer opportunities for hazard reduction. Despite repeated warnings, Australian communities were underprepared for the unprecedented fire season that has already burnt through more than 10 million hectares, taken 28 lives, and killed more than a billion animals.

The incredible toll this crisis is taking on our communities, environment, wildlife, air quality and mental health is immeasurable. The costs of inaction have become too great.

This crisis must be the pivotal moment from which we transform our nation’s climate and bushfire response. I urge all politicians, including yourself, to immediately do more to progress climate change action in Australia and build in greater resilience for recovering communities.

This has to include the creation and implementation of strong legislative change that will produce stronger emissions reductions targets, abandoning the use of ‘carryover credits’ from the Kyoto Protocol, and the rapid uptake of renewable energy solutions.

I am deeply concerned that unless we address climate change through powerful new legislation, and urgently reduce our emissions as part of a global effort, this unprecedented bushfire crisis will become the Australian way of life.

Your response to this issue will be a major determining factor in deciding my vote at the next election, so thank you in advance for raising and pursuing this issue through Parliament.
