Protect Australians from Increased Bushfire Risk

Climate change is worsening the bushfire threat. We need urgent and immediate action on climate change, and we need it now.

We're stepping up and hosting a National Bushfire Summit in 2020.

We need as many voices as possible to call on our political leaders to act immediately against the threat of natural disasters in Australia and come up with a plan to tackle the root cause of the threat - climate change and the burning of fossil fuels.

We need an urgent plan to tackle climate change.

I stand with the Climate Council and Emergency Leaders for Climate Action in their call for a National Bushfire Summit and in urging all political leaders in Australia to take immediate action on climate change to protect Australians from the escalating bushfire risk.

Dear Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, and all political leaders in Australia,

This is not about political arguments. It’s about scientific facts.

Climate change is worsening extreme weather events, exacerbating bushfire conditions and putting Australian lives, properties and livelihoods at greater risk.

These fires are bigger, more intense and more dangerous than we’ve ever seen before. They’re happening earlier in the year, they’re causing more damage and they’re harder to fight.

It’s time for all Governments - State and Federal, Liberal and Labor - to protect Australians by:

- Supporting the National Bushfire and Emergency Summit, hosted by Emergency Leaders for Climate Action in 2020.
-Taking immediate action on climate change, including the rapid reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions and substantial investment to fast-track the transition to renewable energy.
- Acting now to fully resource our emergency services and protect Australians from the worsening bushfire risk.

We, the undersigned, call on all politicians in Australia to start showing decisive leadership in the face of the escalating climate crisis.
